On Friday March 9, 2012 all the students in first grade at Chets Creek Elementary got to wear their pajamas to school to celebrate 1st Grade Sleepover! For many months the students in Mrs. Foster's class have been learning about outer space and the solar system. We know all eight planets, characteristics of the sun and moon, and all about how stars work! After all of our hard work and studying we were able to take a break and enjoy everything that has to do with space through a fun-filled day of activities, crafts and games. The 1st graders started off their day in the dining room for a special breakfast with their friends, teachers and our principal, Mrs. Phillips! After breakfast we headed to our very own Chets Creek Planetarium to take a look at some stars and planets. After stargazing we moved to the music room where Mrs. Tamburrino taught us a Solar System Rap! From there we got to make an astronaut picture frame to remember the day by. It was hard to believe that at this point our day was only half over. After crafting we got to have a short break for lunch with some of our favorite friends and then head right back out to the festivities. After lunch we practiced our teamwork abilities and then got to end our extraordinary day with "Constellation Ball" in the library with our favorite Media Specialist, Mrs. KK. All in all, it was a great day that the students, teaches, and parents will remember for many years to come! Noodle the Dog Visits! 01/22/2012
On Thursday, January 19, 2012 the first graders in Miss Perez's class and the rest of the school got to go to a special assembly just for them! When we got to the assembly there was a dog onstage! The dog's name was Noodle and he works at the Humane Society with his owner, Mrs. Megan. Mrs. Megan and Noodle talked with the first graders about what the Humane Society is, animal safety, and how to take care of a pet. At the end of the assembly Noodle showed us his tricks and ALL the kids got to practice their animal safety by correctly walking up to noodle, asking to touch him, and petting him! Digging Deeper into Reading! 12/05/2011
Miss Perez’s class has been discovering that it isn’t enough just to read a book, you have to “dig deeper” into the text to truly understand and grasp what the author is trying to convey. This objective of the lesson was to further help students grasp that when they are reading a book they need to always be asking questions, using their schema and inferring to better understand what is going on in the text. The lesson was built on a combination of the Florida Sunshine State Standards and a book study done on Debbie Miller’s book, Reading with Meaning. Miss Perez’s class has been reading and examining the book Oliver Button’s is a Sissy by Tommie dePaola. In this book many of the students at school call Oliver a sissy until he participates in a city wide dance recital. After the recital the students in the book change their tune and call him a “star.” This is a great book for the students to dig deeper into the text because it doesn’t come right out and tell the students why Oliver is a “sissy” or why the students start thinking he is a “star.” During this Readers Workshop lesson all the students were asked to write down one “digging deeper” question they had pop into their head while Miss Perez was reading the book. After all the students had a question that they thought helped them “dig deeper” into the text they divided up into groups and chose one question per group to "dig deeper" into by going back in the text! Each group worked on a web, with their question in the middle and the answers that they were able to infer using their schema around it. After all the groups were happy with their webs we closed Readers Workshop by sharing each groups web with the class. The students came up with some fantastic questions to challenge themselves and their peers! Here are some questions and answers that each group came up with: Question from Group 1: "Why did the boys change sissy to star if he didn’t win?" One of their awesome answers: "He’s (Oliver) is not brave at the beginning and at the end he is.” Question from Group 2: "Why doesn't Oliver want to go to school in the end?" One of their awesome answers: "Maybe because Oliver wanted to win first prize and he did not get first prize.” Question from Group 3: "Why does Oliver Button play with dolls, that's what girls do?" One of their awesome answers: "Because Oliver likes his own way of doing things.” Question from Group 4: "Why is he a sissy?" One of their awesome answers: "He doesn't know how to do boy stuff.” Have you read the book Julius-The Baby of the World by Kevin Henkes? All the student's in Miss Perez's class have! We have been studying the renowned author Kevin Henkes for several weeks and today we read the book Julius-The Baby of the World. After reading the book the students were ask to work with their group members to retell the story through pictures. The students did a great job of making sure to tell the beginning, middle, and end. The pictures turned out fabulous! Kevin Henkes would be proud. 2nd Graders show us how to Visualize! 10/07/2011
Second graders from Miss Evanko & Mrs. Tsengas' class have been working on how to visualization! The students were read a book and used what they visualized in their head to help them understand the text they were reading. After hearing the book they recieved the chance to take all the words they heard and become an illustrator. The students drew the pictures that they visualized in their head into their own book! After they finished drawing detailed pictures they headed downstairs to Miss Perez's class to share their fine work with their 1st grade friends. Miss Perez's class loved getting the chance to meet some 2nd graders and listening to some great stories with fantastic illustrations. Let us know if you want to come back soon Miss Evanko & Mrs. Tsengas' class, maybe next time we can read to you! Publishing Party 09/29/2011
On Thursday, September 28, 2011 Miss Perez's class had a publishing party to celebrate our "Small Moment" Narrative stories that we completed! Over the past two weeks we have been working on the writing process by completing a first draft of a small moment story, revising, writing a second draft, editing, and then publishing our final draft! Every student recieved popcorn and got to kick back and listen to their classmates wonderful published stories. We heard stories about The Zoo, A Trip to North Carolina, A Trip to Dolphin Bay, and even about Dinner at Pizza Hut. These first graders are sure shaping up to be great writers! Open House 09/22/2011
Thank you to all the families that showed up at open house! The students had a great time showing their parents around the classroom and explaining what we do during the day. Please remember to check out our Shutterfly Share Site that is now up and running (click on the "Shutterfly" link at the top of the page)! Science Lesson-What is Matter? 09/22/2011
Miss Perez and Miss Johnson's class met for science to talk about matter. First, the students and teachers talked about how to classify or categorize different items in a classroom. The students were able to classify that a chair, table, and desk were all furniture. They also realized that we could classify earrings, a ring, and a watch as jewelry. Next the class was squirted with water from a spray bottle! A bouncy ball was bounced in front of them and they were tossed a balloon to swat around the room. After the students calmed down from passing the balloon around we asked what the water, bouncy ball, and balloon could be classified as? The students tried to think of the best word to describe all three things: objects, things, stuff, were all great answers that were written on the board for students to refer to as we moved to the next component of our Science lesson. After being spritzed with water and receiving the chance to play with a balloon the students were excited to move to the next portion of the science lesson.Miss Perez and Ms. Johnson broke the students up into 6 different groups and explained that they would get the chance to explore all the things at their group table. After exploring their objects for awhile we let the students know that they would be getting a sheet of paper with different categories on it and that they should try their best to classify the different objects they were exploring. Students explored all the things they came across at their stations: pepper, squishy balls, coffee creamer, hand sanitizer, water, balloons, rubber bands, paperclips, and so much more! After students had the chance to explore the things at their station they were given a “Classify Sheet” to categorize all the objects they were exploring. After a fun-filled time of dipping their fingers in strawberry syrup, smelling colored water, and stretching rubber bands to their limit; the students were asked to pass their “classify” sheet to Miss Perez or Ms. Johnson to use for the next portion of the science lesson. The students helped Miss Perez and Ms. Johnson organize all the objects on different tables into categories on a chart for the entire class to see and discuss. Some of those categories were: hard, soft, squishy, smooth, and rough. After classifying all the objects Miss Perez and Ms. Johnson explained that everything on chart was something called "matter" and that matter is anything in the universe that has mass (weight). From here the students realized that all the objects they were exploring had weight and were therefore matter! Our Class Blog is up and Running! 09/08/2011
We have had a great couple weeks writing, reading, counting, playing, and so many other things in Miss Perez's first grade class! Miss Perez is happy to announce that our class blog at "mrsfostersclassblog.weebly.com" is now up and running! Please don't be fooled by the web address, Miss Perez figured that since she will soon be "Mrs. Foster" and she wanted to keep the same blog for many years to come that it would be okay to start the year off as "Mrs Foster" - only on this blog though. As of right now there are three different pages that will be updated throughout the year and as Miss Perez gets the hang of "blogging" many more resources will be added. The three pages you can find on the blog are:
